The End of a [few] Season[s]...

The sun has set over Fenway as another baseball season has come to an end for the Red Sox. Since baseball is such a big deal in Boston, I guess Mother Nature decided to strike back with some crazy weather--ending Fall before it even got started! In the past few days I have seen snow not once, but twice! It never amounted to anything in downtown Boston (so I did not capture it on film) but others like Daphne and Kathy saw a nice dusting!

Before the nor'easter hit on Sunday, it was a very nice almost fall-like day! I hit the river to catch some of the Head of the Charles rowing events. I used to row in for the University of New Hampshire (despite being on the shorter side at 5'3"). Although I no longer row, I still love the sport and have many opportunities to watch the local schools compete! If you have never seen attended the Head of the Charles I highly recommend it! It is the largest two-day rowing event and one of Boston's best traditions, attracting people from all over the world!

Quick Harvest = Quick Report

Paul McCartney played at Fenway Park tonight. I forgot this until I hit a surprising amount of traffic coming home tonight. Unfortunately, he had not started playing yet when I went to the garden tonight for a quick 15 minute trip. I was hoping that a few veggies would be ready so I could use them for dinner. I was right! I picked a few sugar snap peas, beans, Sweet 100s, some rosemary...and my first two cucumbers! I was not sure when to pick them, but since they were about 5-6 inches, I thought I would try them out. I also wanted to continue to encourage new growth, as I confirmed that my cucumber plants are still growing, even though they look horrible! The two cucumbers were Burpless and they were so yummy!! The rest of dinner included rosemary chicken & potatoes, beans, peas and mojitos!

A New Fence!

My garden has a new fence!! Thanks to my wonderful boyfriend, Yves, the new fence and gate were finished late Wednesday night! Night you say?? Yes, we were able to work in the garden until 10pm! I guess you know you live in the city when there is enough artificial light for you to work that late! It also helped that the lights of Fenway Park were on as the Red Sox-Yankees game was still in play.

I am not sure what is happening with the weather lately in New England but it is the pits - and frustrating to an anxious gardener! It has averaged 60 degrees and with rain almost every day. Hopefully the sun will appear tomorrow. Luckily, I have Fridays off during the summer and used today to pick up more supplies, including the hard to find vermiculite! Yves and I also finished getting lumber to build a raised bed that will extend around the perimeter. This will be an on-going project that will one day be filled with a mix of annuals and perennials.

Tonight we leveled the garden in preparation to lay down the weed blocking fabric. We also started building the 4x4 raised beds as tomorrow should be the day for PLANTING! Since it is getting late to start most vegetables from seed, I will be buying starter plants for most of my veggies. I still have to work out exactly what I will be planting and where it will go, but should have it ready to go for tomorrow when I PLANT!! Can you tell that I am excited?? For now, here is my plot layout to give you a general idea of how it will look!
